Wayne Madsen Commits to Derbyshire for 19th Season With New 2027 Deal

Since joining Derbyshire in 2009, Madsen has amassed over 24,000 runs in all formats, including 52 hundreds, solidifying his status as the Club’s contemporary great. Before taking over the position again before the 2025 season, he led Derbyshire to the County Championship Division Two title in 2012. For the last two seasons, Madsen has been the team’s captain in red-ball cricket.

Madsen’s domestic T20 career came to an end in July 2026 when he played his final Vitality Blast match against Leicestershire Foxes. That choice directly led to the red-ball-only setup for 2027, which will concentrate the rest of his playing time on the County Championship.

The next chapter of Madsen’s career was shaped by his return to the Derbyshire captaincy before the 2025 season. He led the team through the County Championship campaigns in 2025 and 2026, and his two hundreds in the summer of 2026 demonstrated that his first-class production is still competitive. Madsen, who moved back to South Africa over the previous winter, claimed that the new agreement’s framework fits his unique situation.

In an official statement Madsen said, “I often speak about how Derbyshire has become an adopted home for me and my family, and this new deal will allow us to spend time here, but also in South Africa, having moved back there last winter. I’d like to thank the Derbyshire supporters for always being behind the team and me. Their support has meant so much throughout my career and I still have the same hunger and excitement to perform for Derbyshire as I did when I first joined in 2009. While results didn’t always go the way we’d hoped in 2026, there were plenty of positive signs and I believe strongly in the quality we have within the group. I’m really excited about what we can achieve next summer and we’ll be determined to put ourselves in contention for promotion.”

Arthur said, “Wayne’s leadership and skill remain key assets for us and I’m pleased he will be returning in 2027. “He scored two excellent centuries this summer, which shows the level he’s still capable of operating at in our red ball team. “Wayne is under no illusions, he knows he is closer to the end of his career than the start, but he will continue to give his all for Derbyshire for as long as he is playing and we could not be happier to have him.”

Derbyshire’s Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, justified Madsen’s stay by citing his leadership abilities and 2026 performance. Madsen’s record of more than 24,000 runs and 52 hundreds across all formats highlights the extent of his service to the club. He captained the Derbyshire team that won the County Championship Division Two title in 2012.
