Megan Schutt Makes History as Third Australian Woman to Reach 150 ODI Wickets

In Women’s One Day Internationals (WODIs), Megan Schutt has become the third Australian to reach 150 wickets. The accomplishment was made on October 9 at Brisbane’s Allan Border Field during the first WODI against Bangladesh. In the third over of the game, the right-arm seamer achieved the milestone by using an inswinger to trap Sharmin Sultana leg before wicket.

Even earlier in the innings, Schutt had established the tone by removing Fargana Hoque with the series’ opening delivery. After Australia won the toss and decided to bowl first, the delivery slashed in from back-of-a-length and carried to first slip, giving them an instant breakthrough.

Schutt is currently the 12th player in women’s ODI cricket history to reach 150 wickets. She is the only Australian woman to accomplish this distinction, joining Cathryn Fitzpatrick with 180 ODI wickets and Ellyse Perry with 166. With 255 ODI wickets, Jhulan Goswami is at the top of the list.

With the opening ball of her spell, Schutt dismissed Fargana Hoque, making an instant impression on the game. After winning the toss and choosing to bowl first, Australia made an early breakthrough when the delivery jagged in from back-of-a-length and carried to first slip. Her second and last victim was Sultana. The visitors were dismissed for 166 when batting first, and Schutt went on to claim 2/19. Out of her ten overs, four were maidens. This match was ultimately won by the Australians by seven wickets.

In the third over of the first ODI against Bangladesh at Allan Border Field, Schutt, then 33 years old, reached the milestone. It was an especially memorable start to the series for the seasoned seamer because the two wickets she took in that spell—Fargana Hoque off the series’ first delivery and Sharmin Sultana for the historic wicket—came in quick succession. As Australia continues their ODI series against Bangladesh, Schutt, who has now exceeded the 150-wicket barrier, will want to get closer to Perry’s total of 166.
