In advance of the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, former India World Cup-winning all-rounder Yuvraj Singh was named assistant and batting coach of the Delhi Capitals on Tuesday. The announcement was made one week after DC signed former India captain Sourav Ganguly as their head coach. The two would be joining the franchise, according to a June PTI story.
Yuvraj, a double World Cup champion and veteran of 304 ODIs, 40 Tests, and 58 T20Is, will take on his first coaching role in the lucrative league. In a press release, Gandhi said, “We are delighted to welcome Yuvraj Singh to Delhi Capitals as our Assistant and Batting Coach. His remarkable career, competitive spirit and deep understanding of the game make him a tremendous addition to our coaching setup. This marks his first formal coaching role in the IPL, and we are confident that his insights, winning mindset and ability to mentor players will make a meaningful difference to our players and our campaign. We look forward to working closely with him and wish him every success as he begins this exciting new chapter with Delhi Capitals.”
Yuvraj’s reconnection with the Delhi franchise is marked by this appointment. He became the most expensive player in IPL history in 2015 when the team, then known as the Delhi Daredevils, paid a record Rs 16 crore (Rs 160 million) for his services. He continued to play in all 14 of the team’s games that season.
Yuvraj added, “I’m also looking forward to teaming up with Dada, this time as coaches. Coaching is something I am truly passionate about, and I cannot wait to get started with this extremely talented squad. I’m sure it’s going to be an exciting journey for me, and I look forward to contributing to the team’s success.”
One of the most illustrious playing records in Indian cricket is held by Yuvraj Singh. In addition to playing in 304 ODIs, 40 Tests, and 58 T20Is, he was a key player in India’s wins at the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup and the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. Over the course of his 132-match IPL career, he amassed 2,750 runs and 36 wickets, making him one of the format’s most influential players across several teams.
Yuvraj has a direct tie to this franchise as well. He played in all 14 of the 2015 IPL season for the Delhi Daredevils, the team that is now known as the Delhi Capitals. The franchise won his services at the auction for Rs 16 crore, which at the time set a new record for the most expensive acquisition in IPL auction history.
The Delhi team is still trying to win its first IPL championship. The squad did not enter the playoffs in the previous two seasons and only made it to the final once, in 2020. The GMR Group and the JSW Group share ownership of Delhi Capitals. Every two years, the two teams take turns running the franchise. 2026 marked the end of GMR’s term.
