Despite not hosting the competition, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has confirmed that the Sri Lanka Women’s National Team has earned automatic qualification for the ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027. The competition is set to take place in India from February 14–28, 2027. Six teams will compete in a total of 16 matches under the T20 format. Following Sri Lanka’s loss of hosting rights owing to governance issues, India was confirmed as the host.
The International Cricket Council’s (ICC) decision regarding the hosting arrangements for the first competition was acknowledged by SLC in a statement. The women’s team qualified based on their position in the current qualification process, even though Sri Lanka will not host. SLC applauded the accomplishment and promised to fully assist the team’s tournament preparations.
India, Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, and Sri Lanka are the six teams who have qualified. The ICC Women’s T20I Rankings as of the cut-off date secured the remaining five teams their seats in the tournament, with India serving as the host nation. The competition, which brings the top six T20 teams together in a Champions Trophy format for the first time, is an important turning point for women’s cricket.
All six teams will compete against one another over the course of 15 matches in a round-robin group stage style. Following the group round, the top two teams will move on to the 16th and final match of the competition, known as the knockout final. Every participating country will play each of the other five teams at least once before to the knockout stage thanks to the round-robin format, which gives every team a chance to make their claim to a spot in the final.
