On Thursday, Abhishek Sharma shattered the record for the quickest century in Indian T20I history. He achieved a three-figure score against Afghanistan in the third T20I at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in just 30 balls, surpassing Rohit Sharma’s previous record of reaching a century off 35 balls against Sri Lanka in Indore back in 2017. He scored 108 off just 34 balls, an innings featuring 9 fours and 11 sixes.
Abhishek reached his half-century in just 16 balls and needed only 14 more to hit three figures, but was dismissed in the tenth over, leaving India at 142 for 1. Sanju Samson, the opening batsman, scored 34 runs off 25 balls on the opposite side.
In the fifth over, Abhishek hit Mohammad Nabi for two sixes and a four, reaching his half-century in just 14 balls. Afghanistan’s top attacking bowlers, Rashid Khan and Mujeeb-ur -Rahman, also didn’t escape Abhishek’s assault, who smashed the former for back-to -back fours in the eighth over and sent the latter flying with two sixes in the ninth.
He hit Abdullah Ahmadzai for a massive six in the ninth over to reach 99, then took a single to complete his century. Abhishek’s innings concluded at 108 when Rashid got him to edge the ball behind the stumps. Rahmanullah Gurbaz completed the catch following confirmation of contact through a review.
In the wider T20I list, which includes Associate nations, Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan holds the record for the fastest century, hitting it in just 27 balls against Cyprus in 2024. In 2025, Turkey’s Muhammad Fahad scored a century off just 29 balls against Bulgaria in Sofia, moving him to second place on the all-format list.
Abhishek’s 30-ball performance ranks third overall and is unmatched among Full Member batters. In the process, Abhishek also broke the India national record. Rohit Sharma had previously achieved that score with a 35-ball century against Sri Lanka in Indore on December 22, 2017. The new record is five balls quicker than Rohit’s performance.
